The artwork of
Arline Erdrich, floorcloths
Erdrich's floorcloth designs are an inevitable evolution and outgrowth of her
unique painting style and technique. (See painting technique under "studio".)
Erdrich uses quality, heavy weight canvas for her skilled, painterly compositions: Rolled to a finish at the edges, and
painted with the finest acrylic pigments to provide the richest colors available. The pieces are finished with multiple
coats of varnish to give a lustrous and highly durable surface, making them not only exceptionally eye appealing, but
so easy to keep clean
Origins
Floorcloths came into popular use in the U.S. in the early 1700's, after having adorned homes in England for some
time. Because the materials were simple and readily available, as opposed to the lengthy and costly process of
spinning, dyeing and weaving wool for rugs, floorcloths gained in popularity and function. With the advent of linoleum,
machine made rugs and wall to wall carpeting after the turn of the twentieth century, the use of these attractive floor
coverings fell out of favor.
Now in contemporary times, the desire for natural materials such as wood, Spanish tile and stones floors, there is
renewed interest in floorcloths that compliment these surfaces; you are afforded the opportunity to participate, along
with the artist, in creating something that suits your personality and fits with your style in your own home, office, or
commercial space.
